Selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first round (first overall) in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of UCLA. ... Signed a contract with the Pirates with an $8 million signing bonus 15 minutes before the signing deadline on Aug. 15, 2011. ... Ranks second at UCLA in career strikeouts (376), third in career games started (49) and fifth in career innings (322.1). ... Previously selected by the New York Yankees in the first round (28th overall) of the 2008 Draft out of Orange Lutheran High School but did not sign.
